Gun Milan Score Below 18 — Should You Reject the Match?

Gun Milan score below 18 — does low Ashta Koota score mean marriage should be rejected? Astrologer Ashish Desai explains with real cases.

Your Ashta Koota score came back as 14 out of 36. Or 11. Or 16.

Every website you checked says the same thing: 18 is the minimum. Below 18, the match is not recommended.

Your family is worried. You are worried.

But before you reject this match — or before you allow this number to end something that may actually work — read this carefully.

Where Did the Number 18 Come From?

The Ashta Koota system gives a maximum of 36 points across 8 compatibility factors. Classical texts state that 18 or above is an acceptable match.

But here is what most people do not tell you about that number.

The classical texts gave this as a general guideline — not an absolute verdict. They did not say that every match below 18 will fail and every match above 18 will succeed. That is a modern oversimplification that has caused immeasurable harm to families and relationships.

I have been doing horoscope matching consultations for over 15 years. I have checked thousands of charts. What I have seen repeatedly tells a very different story.

What 15 Years of Real Cases Actually Shows

I have seen many couples with a Gun Milan score between 10-18 who have been happily married for 20-25+ years. I have seen couples with scores between 18 to 36 who separated within few days to few months to few years.

The score alone did not determine the outcome. The individual horoscopes did.

A match scoring 32 out of 36 with a severely afflicted 7th house/7th lord, 8th house, 8th lord, 4th house, 4th lord, 2nd house, 2nd lord and karaka venus in one partner’s chart is a far more concerning situation than a match scoring 16 with strong 7th houses, a good Venus, and compatible Dasha periods in both charts.

This is not an opinion. This is what the charts show — consistently, across thousands of cases.

The One Thing No Astrology Website Will Tell You

Before any chart analysis, there is something that matters even more.

The temperament and character of the two people.

A person who has been raised to respect marriage — who understands that relationships require effort, patience and adjustment — will outlive any chart combination. Their fundamental orientation towards the relationship is one of commitment and understanding.

A person who has not been raised with this understanding — who approaches marriage with entitlement, rigidity or selfishness — will struggle even with a perfect score of 36 out of 36.

The chart gives tendencies. Character determines outcomes.

This is why in my consultations I try to understand the upbringing, values and general approach to life of both individuals — not just their birth details. The chart is the map. The person driving is what matters.

The Pothole Road Analogy

Think of a Gun Milan score below 18 as driving on a road with potholes.

The road is not closed. You can still reach your destination.

But you need to drive with more care. Control your speed. Manoeuvre with patience. Be alert to the bumps ahead rather than driving carelessly assuming the road is smooth.

A couple with a score below 18 can have a successful marriage — but they may need to be more flexible, more adjusting and more conscious of their differences than a couple with a higher score. They need to work at it more deliberately.

That is not a reason to reject the match. That is information about how to approach the relationship.

Not All Low Scores Are Equal — Which Kootas Matter Most

A score of 14 where Nadi is 8/8 and Bhakoot is 7/7 is very different from a score of 14 where both Nadi and Bhakoot are 0.

Here is what each zero score actually means in practice:

Nadi — 0 out of 8 (Most Critical)

Nadi carries the highest weight of all 8 factors — 8 points. Same Nadi means both partners share the same constitutional and energetic type according to Ayurvedic principles.

When Nadi score is zero — this warrants a serious and careful look at the 5th house and the promise of progeny in both individual charts. Nadi Dosha at its most significant level relates to genetic and constitutional compatibility and its implications for children. This does not mean the marriage cannot happen — but it means the individual horoscopes must be checked carefully before proceeding.

Rajju — (Tamil and Kerala Porutham)

Rajju is not part of the North Indian Ashta Koota system but is the most critical factor in South Indian Porutham matching.

Rajju represents the flow of breath and vital energy between two people. When both partners are in the same Rajju group, there can be an absence of natural attraction and sync — the energies do not complement each other in the way they should. You can sometimes observe this as a lack of natural chemistry between two people even when everything else seems right on paper.

This does not automatically mean rejection — but it does mean the individual charts need to show strong compensating factors.

Gana — 0 out of 6

The three Ganas — Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa — represent the fundamental quality of a person’s nature. Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic in Vedic terms.

When Gana score is zero — typically when a Rakshasa Gana person is matched with a Deva or Manushya Gana person — there is a natural imbalance in how the two people approach life, relationships and values. A Rakshasa Gana person can have a dominating and controlling nature that creates difficulty for a partner with a gentler Deva or Manushya temperament.

Same Gana is ideal. Deva with Manushya is acceptable. Any Rakshasa combination needs more careful assessment.

A rakshas gana person can also be well-behaved if he has benefic planets influence his moon and lagna, more planets in satvic and rajasic signs will show a different side of him.

Yoni — 0 or 1 out of 4

Yoni compatibility is based on the animal symbol of each nakshatra. Each nakshatra is assigned an animal — and the compatibility between those animals determines the Yoni score.

This factor has become increasingly relevant for today’s generation where physical and intimate compatibility is openly acknowledged as important in a marriage.

Hostile Yoni pairs like Mongoose and Snake — for example need to be checked as Couples with such hostile yoni combinations often experience persistent friction, irritability and conflict in their day-to-day relationship — not just in intimacy but in general temperament as well.

Friendly Yoni pairs or same Yoni naturally indicates more harmony in temperament and nature. Zero Yoni score — especially the hostile combinations — needs to be taken seriously.

Bhakoot — 0 out of 7

Bhakoot checks the Moon sign relationship between both partners. The 2/12 and 6/8 combinations with enemy lords create Bhakoot Dosha.

Bhakoot is deeply connected to Graha Maitri — the friendship between the ruling planets of both Moon signs. When the lords are friendly, even a Bhakoot Dosha situation has significantly reduced impact. When the lords are enemies — the friction is more persistent.

Graha Maitri score of 3 or above (which means neutral to friendly lords) can considerably reduce Bhakoot Dosha’s negative effect.

So What Does a Score Below 18 Actually Tell You?

It tells you that one or more of the 8 compatibility factors are not optimal between these two people.

It does not tell you whether this marriage will succeed or fail.

That answer lies in:

  • The strength of the 7th house and its lord in both individual charts
  • The condition of Venus in the man’s chart and Jupiter in the woman’s chart
  • The promise of married life in each individual horoscope
  • The Dasha periods — are both running planetary periods that support marriage and stability?
  • The Graha Milan — how do the planets of both charts interact with each other’s houses?
  • The balance of malefic content between both charts — Paap Samya

Gun Milan is approximately 25% of complete compatibility analysis. The remaining 75% is in the individual horoscopes — and that 75% is what actually determines whether the marriage will work.

The Practical Question You Should Be Asking

Instead of asking “Is 14 out of 36 enough to get married?” — ask these questions:

Is there a promise of marriage and married life in both individual horoscopes?

Are the 7th house and its lord strong in both charts?

Are the Dasha periods of both partners supportive of marriage and stability?

Is the Paap Samya — the balance of afflictions — reasonably matched?

If the answers to these questions are positive — a score of 14 can absolutely lead to a successful marriage with the right approach and mutual effort.

If the answers to these questions raise serious concerns — even a score of 32-33-34 may not be enough.
